TBNEH Weekly Newsletter
November 20, 2019
Good morning everyone,

We recently announced our new pilot program "Meals On Wheels St. Petersburg", in partnership with Meals On Wheels of Tampa and Daystar Life Center. And we need your help getting the word to potential volunteers and recipients!

MOWSP was developed to serve seniors and 18+ homebound individuals (due to illness, injury or disability) with a hot meal delivered to their home, by a volunteer, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. MOWSP is an alternative option for: 1) people placed on a wait-list; or 2) people who do not qualify for other programs due to age.  MOWSP currently delivers to the following St. Petersburg zip codes:  33701, 33705, 33707, 33711, 33712, and 33713.

We need volunteers! Community volunteers help us to deliver meals each day. MOWSP currently has 2 routes, requiring a total of 2 volunteers each delivery day (6 volunteers per week). Though, each day we are welcoming new recipients on to the program and the number of routes continues to grow.  We are in desperate need of volunteers to help our staff deliver lunch time meals (between 10-2pm) in St. Petersburg. A route takes about 1 hour to complete and it is very easy to get signed up. We welcome families, friends and businesses to volunteer delivering a route together!

If you know anyone that could benefit from this program or would like to volunteer to deliver a route, please have them call (813) 344-5837 or complete an Application on our website. If eligible, meal delivery or voluteering can begin immediately immediately.

Thank you!

(3) Metropolitan Ministries in need of Thanksgiving donations, 13,000 turkeys

Thanksgiving is almost here, and Metropolitan Ministries needs your help. Metropolitan Ministries volunteers are busy setting up the organization's holiday tent just in time for Thanksgiving, but they're low on food donations. They started the holiday tent nearly 40 years ago — back then it was on their campus. The tent has grown to the size of a football field and is now in an open field on North Rome Ave.

"We are here to meet the need of our community, " said Vice President of Marketing Justine Burke. The need has grown and Burke says they have to provide food for 37% more people than they did last year. That's more than 260,000 lbs of food.

"We barely had 100,000 pounds last week," said Burke. Even though they get donations every day, Burke said they are not where they need to be.

"We are counting on the community to rally," Burke said. "We need people to go out and get our most needed items, which are Ham, Yams, and Cranberry sauce."

There are many different ways you can donate. You can go to the holiday tent at 2609 N. Rome Ave, send money through their website or go to one of their other locations. For more details, click here.

(4) Trump Administration Wants to Cut the Power of SNAP for Millions – Comment by Dec. 2!

USDA's proposed rule on SNAP Standardization of State Heating and Cooling Standard Utility Allowances would cut program benefits by a total of $4.5 billion over five years. This cut would result from changes in how states take households’ utility costs into account in determining the amount of SNAP benefits for which they qualify.

Comment today (Comment deadline: December 2, 2019) and tell the Trump Administration the proposal would:

  • Exacerbate the struggles many low-income people have paying for costs of both food and utilities.
  • Have harmful impacts on health and well-being as well as on the economy.
  • Cause 19% of SNAP households to get lower SNAP monthly benefits.
  • Disproportionately impact elderly people and people with disabilities.

(6) Feed the hungry at Thanksgiving (Nov. 29)

For the seventh year, St. Anne's in New Port Richey will be providing a traditional Thanksgiving meal to the homeless and hungry in our community. Last year, they served 378 meals and took more than 100 leftover meals to local shelters. They also distributed more than 6,000 donated items. Help St. Annes, and those they serve, by spreading word of this event and by collecting donations of non-perishable food, new or used clothes or personal hygiene items.

(7) Food Justice & Sustainability Internship Showcase - December 5
